Coaching Basketball – Peppering the Court with Team Drills

Team drills are important to use because they help build valuable chemistry — getting them used to the many different habits and styles of play their teammates display. This section presents a broad mixture of team drills that will help raise your players’ offensive and defensive skills to new heights.

Finding and feeding the post

When your players are handling the ball along the perimeter, they need to be able to recognize opportunities to deliver the ball into the post area. Because of the mass of players around the lane, post passes must be accurate passes. The finding and feeding the post drill helps your ball handlers recognize pass opportunities and make accurate post passes.

What you need: Six players. Two balls.

How it works: Position two offensive players on the perimeter to the right and left of the free-throw arc. Put an offensive and defensive player about a foot or so on the outside of each side of the lane.

1. On your whistle, the ball handlers on the perimeter start dribbling to the left or right to look for an open passing lane. At the same time, the two offensive players in the post area should try to establish position to receive a pass, while the defenders should try to take away their position.

2. When the ball handler finds an open passing lane, he makes the post pass. Don’t allow the perimeter players to cross the three-point line, where executing a post pass would be much easier.

3. After receiving the pass, the post player can put up a shot or, if he’s guarded very well, send a pass back out to his partner for a threepoint shot.

Coaching pointers: Making a good pass into the post is all about recognizing available angles. If the defender is taking away the high side (the area toward the middle of the lane), for instance, advise the ball handler to dribble toward the baseline to create a better passing lane (see Figure 14-4a). If the defender is positioned down low, advise the ball handler to move toward the top of the key to make the post pass. The perimeter player should always relocate himself after feeding the post so he’ll be open on the return pass. If the youngster just passes the ball and stands still, he’ll be easy to guard.
