James Naismith Biography

Lebron James, Dywane Wade and even the great Michael Jordan would have all been just regular tall average Joes if it wasn’t for one man born in Canada named James Naismith.

Naismith was born in Canada around 1861 and was taught at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where James eventually worked as the athletic director. In 1890, he relocated to the United States and taught physical education to students at Springfield College.

During James time working at McGill University he experimented with different methods to keep hyperactive college students entertained and fit. What he preferred was a great sport which can be enjoyed indoors for there are some harsh winter months in New England. The History Of Basketball could have stopped there since the head of physical education Dr. Luther Gulick told Dr. James Naismith he had only 14 days to come up with the sport. Instead of complaining about the short time limit Dr. Naismith overcame this hard task and invented basketball.

In this effort to come up with a new game in such a short time, Naismith was led simply by three primary views. First of all, he examined the most well-known games in those times. Games like rugby, soccer and baseball. Naismith recognized the risks involving a smaller ball and determined that a bigger ball appeared to be most trusted. Second, he observed that the majority of actual physical contact took place running with the ball, instead of kicking it like soccer.

After evaluating and testing numerous of ideas, Naismith recalled a sport he once played as a child. This sport has plenty of names but one of the most common names is “Duck on a rock”. The concept associated with this ancient sport was to toss tiny stones in a Basket positioned at the top of a large rock. This game gave James the idea to name the new game basketball.

In 1929, the basketball was redesigned in order to give it one more ounce than a soccer ball. The National Basketball Association was created in 1949 when the merger of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League took place.

Basketball has become tremendously popular sport. The 82 season long game gives Americans great entertainment each and every year.
